Thanks for visiting. I am no longer updating Notes to Self. I hope you'll join me on my current website, PlantingDandelions.com

Out

I'm thrilled to finally share two things that have been in the works for some time.

First, my article, "Staying Thick Through Thin Times," is in the current (February) issue of Good Housekeeping, now on the stands and in mailboxes. It's a story that those of you who have been around for a while will recognize in part: our year of living on the brink of financial disaster, and the lessons learned about staying married through the downside of for richer, for poorer.

I put heart and soul into this one. I hope others are able to take heart from it.

Second, there's this:

004

Even when you've been expecting it for several months, there aren't really words to describe the feeling of turning to the masthead page of a magazine that has been literally a household name for nearly 125 years, publishing women writers from Virginia Woolf to Anna Quindlen, and seeing your own name there.

I cried a little. I called my Mom. I wrote my editor. I took the boys out for ice cream and drank a little champagne last night. Today, it's back to the eternal truths: laundry, trash, and figuring out what's for supper.

Life is beautiful.

This is the 2nd post in five minutes I have read that celebrates a positive moment. Notes from the trenches has a quick, gratitude type of too.
It's just kind of neat is all.

But what I mean to say is, yahoo! for you, and even more so for taking the time to celebrate before returning to your eternal truths.

I can honestly say I'm not surprised. Not about the specific accomplishment, but the direction in which your headed. There is definitely much more to come.

That still doesn't prevent me from saying Congrats!! Keep running out those ground balls.

congratulations on both.
I will find the good housekeeping article.
What does a contributing editor actually do? Do you contribute on a more regular; scheduled basis?

It means you can expect to read something by me every few months or so. It also reflects a percieved harmony between my voice and the overall spirit of the magazine, which I am especially honored and humbled by, having just had my morning coffee with the other articles in this issue.

To name a few: A very funny and informative piece about a mom going undercover on Club Penguin; Ann Hood's story about her husband's gift of perfume, and Amity Gaige's stunning memoir of food and love, the match of anything in any literary magazine, anywhere.

It's not for me to say if I'm in their league, but I'm proud to be in their number. :-)

This is how I described you to someone at CBC, in April of 2007: "She rubs shoulders with the rest of us right now, but some day Kyran will be a star."

So I'm not surprised about this news, just delighted that it's happening for you so quickly, and in such a convincing way. I think the best is yet to come...

I just finished reading that article, your writing is amazing, thank you for sharing your journey. I first read your work in GH, the one about the washing machine being broken? I tore it out and left it on my husbands desk....it could have been about us. I have been a fan ever since. Congratulations and I can't wait to keep reading your articles!

Congratulations!! Oh that is so exciting! I'm a dude and i would LOVE to be an editor for that magazine.

Also, I loved the last 2 lines: "laundry, trash, and figuring out what's for supper." It seem they reserve editing positions at Good Housekeeping for the most wonderful people, not just good writers. :]

Ms. Pittman....I had to write to tell you that I LOVED, LOVED your GH article. This article just spoke to me - I do mean RIGHT TO ME! My husband and I have 3 young boys and he is just starting his own business. I have already torn out your article to keep and use in those difficult times which I'm sure we'll face. Just wanted to say "thanks!" for putting into words what so many of us must feel.

Hi, I'm new here, directly from your GH article. I repeated that last line to myself "I have everything I need today," and wept. I've had everything I needed yesterday and the day before, and couldn't see that clearly.

Thank you.

I was sitting at my Dr's office, wondering how I was going to pay the bill (my husband and I were laid off within a month of each other... six months ago). I picked up the GH next to me and read your article. I even stood at the door when my visit was over so I could finish. It was hard for me to not get choked up.

Thank you for pouring your heart out, so I could realize the attitude adjustment I needed to make in MY heart. If everything else around me fails, the love for my darling hard-working husband will not.

All the best. - K.
